38% Silver diamine fluoride (SDF) is an effective solution for the treatment of dental hypersensitivity. It works by occluding the dentinal tubules, which helps to minimize sensitivity. Silver has antimicrobial properties while fluoride promotes remineralization.

SDF is applied topically to the teeth, often using a small brush or applicator. It can be particularly useful in situations where traditional dental treatments (such as fillings or sealants) may not be feasible, especially with special needs patients who have difficulty receiving traditional dental care.

SDF will cause staining of carious lesions. This is due to a reaction with tooth minerals, resulting in a black discoloration. SDF does not cause staining of healthy dentin or enamel. Patients should be informed of this possibility before treatment.

How to apply SDF?

• Remove food debris, isolate, and dry the area to be treated.
• Protect the gingiva and lips by applying petroleum jelly.
• Place 1-2 drops of NuSmile NuNamel SDF into a dappen dish and apply using a micro-brush.
• For interproximal application, apply the SDF on the fuzzy part of floss using a micro-brush.
• Isolate treated area for 1 minute.
• Remove excess SDF with a cotton swab or roll.
